Deritend aeration project saves Anglian Water £37k a year
Anglian Water, the largest water and wastewater company in England and Wales, has taken delivery of industry-leading Landustrie aeration equipment that will deliver energy cost savings of £37,000 a year.
Aeration in sewage treatment consumes around 80% of the total energy used in the plant. Installation of vertical fixed aerators can reduce this dramatically if the efficiencies are designed into the project.
Deritend is the UK agent for Landustrie which manufacture the most energy efficient fixed vertical aerator on the market today. Anglian Water approached Deritend to replace several ‘jet’ type aerators with the intention of improving the efficiency of the aeration process in the four cascaded tanks.
Deritend undertook a survey of the site and submitted a proposal including supply and installation of Landy-7 aerators from Landustrie.
The savings that Deritend identified were more than enough to convince Anglian Water to proceed with the project, which included removal of the old submersible units installation of the new equipment including bottom-baffles and foundation plates, and testing for vibration, noise, splashing and oxygen transfer.
The project took only two weeks to complete, upon which the energy savings were calculated, confirming the original estimates. The total power consumption of the original set up was 88kW, at an annual energy cost of £66,000. The refitted site performed 33.2kW, costing £29,000 per annum. The total cost saving from energy is therefore £37,000 – pay back on this installation is projected in two years from energy savings alone. The new installation is expected to require significantly less maintenance which will undoubtedly bring further savings.
Jamie Wesley of Deritend comments: “This project was a good example of how Deritend and Landustrie provide a complete package for our customer. We are confident that we can provide energy savings in most aeration systems with the product and expertise that we have. Also, with environmental concerns becoming a key factor, this project alone will remove 200 tonnes of emissions from Anglian Water’s total carbon footprint.”
Following the success of this project, Anglian Water has asked Deritend to review further sites so that they may reduce costs further.
